Jonn Penney, singer of local 90s indie sensation Ned's Atomic Dustbin, spent most of lockdown mentoring bands on the MAS Records artist development scheme at The Base Studios in Stourbridge, where bands are funded for rehearsals, live demos and recording sessions. Covid 19 has driven Jonn and the bands online through Zoom, Teams and other channels, however this has not stood in the way of progress and many of the artists Jonn has worked with have evolved into more professional, focused and commercially viable propositions. With so much time spent focussing and reflecting on what a band in lockdown can do, Jonn has noticed these bands have honed down aspects of their craft that often get overlooked in favour of rehearsing for gigs. Song writing especially, says Jonn, has been accepted as the main priority. Now many of these bands will reap the benefits when they finally take to the stage in a live venue with chart-worthy songs to showcase.
Jonn says "We're all talking a lot about what the pandemic has prevented, delayed, disrupted and down-right ruined for musicians. The wounds are truly very deep but these bands, absolutely dedicated to their cause, have been working around isolation, using their creativity behind closed doors, individually and collectively, to prepare some great music for the emerging world to hear and, at long last, to witness in a live setting."
One of the hardest difficulties for a band during lockdown was not knowing what palpable outcome is possible, so Jonn decided that a showcase gig at Stourbridge's prestige venue, the Town Hall, would give the bands something great to look forward to. However, Jonn is keen to clarify that he has selected the bands purely on merit.
Jonn says "Nobody benefits from playing a set of mediocre songs badly or without conviction. The bands I’ve selected are ready to put on a tight show, playing songs that have the right ingredients to hook in an audience and they all understand that performance will be key."
