The town of Midden is desperately run down and dilapidated, its poverty-stricken people mostly unemployed.

 

But then a mysterious stranger arrives out of the blue. The stranger has fabulous wealth and promises that it can be used to revive the town's fortunes - but only if the citizens of Midden agree to a solemn pact; they must make the most awful promise to the stranger.
